A Family Day in Detroit: Where to Go with Kids
Planning a family stay at Shinola Hotel? Discover the best kid-friendly spots within walking distance and beyond in downtown Detroit. Detroit is a city built for exploring, and can be especially enchanting through the eyes of its youngest adventurers. Here’s how to make the most of your family time in the Motor City.
Arts, Culture & Exploration
Start your day at the Museum of Illusions, just a short walk from the hotel. Kids (and adults) can lose themselves in mind-bending exhibits, optical illusions, and photo ops that challenge perception at every turn. It's the kind of place where "don't touch" doesn't apply—and everyone leaves a little more curious than they arrived.
Alternatively, explore the Michigan Science Center for hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, and an IMAX theater—or visit the Detroit Institute of Arts next door, where kids can wander through galleries filled with ancient artifacts, awe-inspiring works, and Diego Rivera's massive Detroit Industry Murals. Admission to the DIA is free for kids under 18, and guests of Shinola Hotel receive complimentary admission as part of their stay!
Riverfront Adventures
Head to Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park along the Detroit riverfront. This 22-acre park features playground areas, a sandy beach, walking trails, and stunning views of the river—perfect for burning energy while taking in the scenery. Pack a picnic (we recommend a bucket of fried chicken and sides from Penny Red’s!) or grab lunch nearby and let the kids explore.
A short drive takes you to the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center. This interactive facility lets families experience Michigan's natural wonders without leaving the city and allows kids to traverse the habitat—think simulated fishing, rock climbing walls, nature-inspired play equipment and virtual kayaking.
Head upriver to Belle Isle, Detroit's island park in the middle of the Detroit River. The Belle Isle Aquarium, America's oldest continuously operating aquarium, is an enchanting space where kids can get up close with freshwater species. The island itself offers beaches, trails, a conservatory, and plenty of room to roam. (Insider Tip: Head to the northwest tip of the island for stunning sunset views!)
Wind Down
Whatever your adventure, return to Shinola Hotel after a full day of fun. Stop by the Living Room to mingle with fellow explorers, or cozy up with the kids and order room service. Wind down and make yourself at home.
