Press Play on the City's Soundtrack
If techno is Detroit's heartbeat, the genres that came before are its lifeblood.
Techno didn't emerge from nowhere. It grew out of the rich musical soil that spawned Motown, hip-hop, and more — absorbing funk, soul, R&B, and disco before being transformed by a new generation of producers who fused those roots with synthesizers and drum machines into something the world had never heard. What these producers built eventually circled the globe, and it continues to reverberate today.
Movement Electronic Music Festival has been held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend since 2000, drawing electronic music devotees from around the world back to the place where it all began. It's one of the longest-running dance music events in the world.
The Birthplace of Techno
For a weekend every May, Hart Plaza becomes a gathering point for people who understand that Detroit didn't just contribute to techno music — it invented it.
DJ Holographic x Shinola Hotel
In celebration of Movement, we've partnered with DJ Holographic, a Detroit-born DJ and producer who has spent her career tracing those roots and blazing a new path forward. Known for sets that are visceral, transportive, and impossible to categorize — fusing house, disco, techno, R&B, and Motown into something entirely her own — DJ Holographic has curated an exclusive playlist for Shinola Hotel that traces Detroit's techno legacy through her own artistic lens: genre-spanning, sensory, and infused with the themes of comfort and sensuality that run throughout her larger body of work.
Throughout Movement weekend, the playlist will be woven into the sonic fabric of the hotel. For guests — whether lifelong Detroiters or experiencing the city for the first time — it's an intimate encounter with the creative expression that makes this place unlike anywhere else. In the weeks leading up to the festival, DJ Holographic will also offer an inside look at her creative process, from how she builds a set to the rituals that ground her before she steps behind the decks.
